Well Done! Absolutely busted. The plane leaving frame completely before the wing comes off makes the transition to the r/c plane simple. An amateur cameraman? Then why was he ON the runway and was able to approach the plane? Also, any fool would have known to keep rolling film for the pilot reaction and the post-landing plane inspection. The pre/post plane differences are obvious too now that you point it out. Brilliant!! Thanks for the EXCELLENT JOB!!

I believe the second plane is an RC model very skillfully controlled and landed with the right wing missing.
The pilot in the cockpit after landing was most likely shot against a “green screen” later and added to the models cockpit in post production. Fairly straight forward, especially these days

by the way, i work ni the real Rad Bull Airrace Series as technician for Hannes Arch, thats were i have my background from about this planes.

it is simple, this airplane would fall on the side with just one wing and the landing gear dont move at all during this hard landing (in reality it would be gone). But a well done fake.

One more point: People relly need to stop calling each other idiots and morons. If the true details of the video’s origin are ever revealed, a lot of the contradictory explanations of how it was made - as well as the dozens of obsrvations as to things that looked very obviously fake - will be proven wrong. Not too many of us will come out of this one smelling like a rose!

The plane really does appear to have different proportions, with the shape from the earlier frames being sleeker and with a noticeably longer nose. This still doesn’t explain what’s happening here, though. The part where the plane lands (which is what’s in question here), and all the way through to the ending, shows the second, stubby proportions consistantly. So while the differing proportions do seem suspect, they don’t point to an RC plane landing followed by a transition to a real plane.

Look at the wheels pants. In both pictures the left wheel is slightly behind the right - hence, same relative angle to the camera. Now look at landing gear struts. The top planes struts connect at the leading edge of the wing, where as the lower planes struts attach about 1/5 to the rear of the leading edge.

I’ve looked at it frame by frame too. The switch was made when the plane was out of frame, just before the wing was “ejected” by the RC pilot on the ground.

I am making no claim about the original video. Having stepped individually through every frame many times, I am unable to either prove or disprove that it is real. I’ve looked at timing, sun angles, position of the control surfaces, etc. I stick by my belief that your disproof is not compelling.

There may not be enough information in the original video itself so that, as you suggested, additional outside data is required to come to a definite conclusion.

Maybe we should go the other way - you prove that it’s real.

For instance, IF this ACTUALLY had happened, there would exist an FAA accident report, newspaper article or TV news story. I’ve seen nothing other than a questionable video - have you??

I stepped through this video one frame at a time. Although it could be a fake, you not have proven so. The lighting, shadows, and perspective distortion could all be explained by the differing camera angles. It is true that the camera is not moving, but the plane certainly is. You have not proven your case either beyond a reasonable doubt, or even using the lesser test of the “prepondrance of the evidence.”

Good Job! I’m a graphic artist and I can’t help but notice things that are off. I was saying some of the same things while watching it for the first time!

I called BS on this when a friend of mine sent it to me and raved. I use 3D Studio Max and After Effects in my work and there are tell-tale signs of compositing, especially as it hits the ground and turns at the end. Shadows are wrong and the gear crosses over the runway and doesn’t cast a shadow. The camera shake gave it away for me. This is a very well done FAKE. Good job! Whoever did it. DZ

    It’s called chroma key

  14. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

    LOL!! ok.

  15. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

Exactly… RC planes can fly like a copter because of the power/weight ratio but no way this one could.

    sorry i meant:

A plane with only its left wing will roll RIGHT not LEFT - physics 101 :)
Thats the first proof of a fake.

What about Santa? Do you know something that I don’t?

  19. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

Oh and not to mention, you can’t stop the propeller that fast!

  20. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

Well duh. If you just look at the end of the video, the plane looks like it’s from a video game. Too damn shiny, too damn clean.

  21. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

Does there really need to be a video and a bug discussion about this? Seriously, you can tell its fake just by looking at it.
Quit making making a big fucking deal out of it.

  22. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

    How about Santa? Party pooper.

  23. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

and, have you considered that when the plane hits the ground, it does a jump like 10 - 15 feet in the air, and does not take ANY damage AT ALL

  24. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

you can edit a real guy running to an animation. plus, the reactions would have been much more extreme. finaly, the tires left no skids in the asphalt or grass, even though it was going considerably fast.

  25. Anonymous on November 11th, 2008 2:38 am

A lot of what you note doesn’t appear on the rest of the video, only your stills. I think you are underestimating this pilot’s coolness in an extreme situation. Take note of the guy running up to the plane afterwards…
